Hi guys,
This is for an ex Rangie owner who is thinking of buying another. He wants to tow his boat with it which when on the trailer will be, say 5.5 ton. Normal rating for a Rangie is well beneath this but both he and I have seen the green oval with huge loads in the past.
Is it something to do with connecting the trailer brakes direct to the tow vehicle?
And does anyone have any experience of this - things to look out for etc etc
Cheers

The maximum a RR can tow is 4000kgs and that is with coupled brakes, not over-run.
Yes we knw they can haul them, but he would have an overweighjt of some 25% which VOSA would not like one bit. The other thing to consider is the noseweight, which is a pathetically low 75kg on a RR/Disco.
With a load and trailer of around 5½ tonnes and a RR weighting around 2, he is going to be very close to the cut off for HGV/tacho etc as well, surely?
Even i would not consider pulling that much TBH _________________ DEANO in Brum

Nor me, that is a bit over the top I think, to remain safe.
I feel I'm pushing my luck sometimes with the Disco on the trailer! _________________ I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous! |

The first time I took a trailer load of scrap to the merchant last year, it was a bit scary driving the 110. When we put it on the weighbridge it was 5.75 tonnes all up. With 2 tonnes of 110, that makes it just over the max towing weight of 3.5 tonnes. Even at that, I wouldn't want to do it again! 40mph was about as fast as I felt comfortable.
Since then we've always been more cautious about how much we put on the trailer..... which has 2.6 tonne suspension BTW _________________ Rgds

the problem i have with that sort of towing is getting used to the feeling that some one has sailed a boat right up to my rear bumper and the sod is trying to come through the rear door.
that aside, i find i can tow heavy loads - it's stopping them that really worries me. |

I had to stop sharp at the Red Lion traffic lights in Martlesham one day (which will give you an idea how long ago this was), and the Lancia Beta HPE on the trailer jumped over the chocks and rammed my Mk3 Corry up the 'arris.
Tried to pull it back over using the old fence posts by the phone box and started to pull them over so had to drive back to Westleton with Bonnet to Boot contact all the way.
There were some nasty noises on the corners, i'll tell you! _________________ DEANO in Brum

I had two that never made it onto the road; they were just too rotten in the end (funny how things go around! - story of my life!)
One was red and the other was white. _________________ DEANO in Brum

| it was always my ambition to buy one, volumex of course, and take the engine and gearbox complete with sub frame, turn it round and bolt it on the back, thus making a mid engined 2 seater. I could never find one that wasn't rotten to the gills. |
